Two landmarks get mixed up here often. Westminster Cathedral stands just off Victoria Street, close to the station. It is the Roman Catholic mother church for England and Wales, designed by John Francis Bentley and opened in 1903, and it is built in a neo-Byzantine style with a tall brick campanile. Westminster Abbey is a different building, about a ten minute walk further east along the same street. Cardinal Place, the shopping and office block opposite the cathedral, opened in 2006.
Buckingham Palace is a short walk up Buckingham Palace Road. Victoria Palace Theatre is on Victoria Street and the Apollo Victoria Theatre is on Wilton Road, which is why late evening bookings are common here.
